#Charles Langston

Mac and Hugo had made their way to the seaside town of Brindleton Bay. It was the birthplace of Charles Langston II and the place where he married his wife Madeleine.

Mac felt like they had been lucky, to find yet another famous figure in their family tree whose lineage they could trace back one step further. But they were also very aware that they may be nearing the end. Unless another notable figure came up, it was going to be almost impossible for them to trace the family tree back further given how far they had already come. They couldn’t believe their luck so far that they had managed to trace back into the 1890s - and hoped that perhaps there was one more mystery left for them to uncover.

Mac and Hugo traipsed along the Brindleton dockland markets, pondering where they should start. Both agreed that a cemetery may hold some clues if they could find the name Langston.

They approached a man at a stall and asked him whereabouts the cemetery was.

‘We’re doing a family history project,’ explained Mac. ‘Looking for the name Langston. Apparently they lived here way back in the 1890s at least.’

‘Oh yeah,’ said the man. ‘The cemetery is up at the lighthouse. Langston you say? There’s an old farm called Langston Farm up the back of town, too. Maybe that’s what you’re looking for?’

Mac was ecstatic. Another stroke of luck! They headed off for the cemetery at the Lighthouse, where they found several old, crumbling headstones bearing the surname Langston.

There was a young boy aged eight - Oliver Langston, whose parents were Charles and Charlotte. And not too far from his headstone were those very people - Charles and Charlotte Langston, whose headstones noted that they were survived by their five children - Agnes, Charles, Juniper, Frank and Sybil.

This was it, Mac thought. Charles Langston II - here was his mother and father. He had siblings too. And they lived here in Brindleton Bay. The old farmhouse must have been their home, and Mac and Hugo eagerly made their way there.

Traipsing through the forest up an old dirt track, Mac didn’t know what they would find. A hopeful part of them hoped maybe there would be descendants still living there for them to meet.

But they knew realistically that it was wishful thinking. And when they came upon the old farmhouse, it was sad but unsurprising to them that it was old, decrepit and abandoned.

Mac felt a deep foreboding feeling that they had reached the end. There were no more leads to follow. They would never know what life was like here on this farm in 1890, or how its inhabitants came to be there.

‘I… don’t know what else we can do,’ they confessed to Hugo. ‘It feels like there are no more stones that can be turned over here. It’s an old abandoned farm. I thought maybe someone would still be here…’

‘Hey now,’ said Hugo softly. ‘This is ok. You have traced your family history into the 1890s. Mac, you’ve uncovered 12 generations of people who came before you - they lived such diverse lives. We got stuck so many times and we still got here. Maybe this is the end, but that’s not a bad thing. Think of everything you can share with your family when you go home.’

Mac felt sad, thinking about going home. They had so enjoyed spending this time with Hugo, having a companion to share this journey through history with, to motivate them to keep going even when they got stuck.

‘It’ll suck though to go home… and leave you,’ they confessed to Hugo.

‘I’ll miss you too,’ said Hugo, wrapping Mac in a big hug.

In the quiet moment under the sunset, in the forest next to the abandoned old building, something passed between the two of them. A mutual agreement that while this was the end of their search for their family history, this wasn’t the end for them. Their story was only just beginning.

I would love a tv show based on Hetty’s origin story. It could follow Hetty’s OG team during the Cold War. It could have a young Owen Granger, young AJ Chegwidden, Sterling Bridges, Harris Keane, and Charles Langston.

My idea is that it opens with modern Hetty telling the story before she dies, maybe tired of all the secrets. The show could focus on the Clandestine Unit.

The 306 Workshop Group, also known as the Harlem Art Workshop, was founded by artist Charles Alston. This group served to bring together Black artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Augusta Savage, and Langston Hughes, just to name a few. Located at 306 West 141st Street in Harlem, the Harlem Art Workshop provided these artists with both a meeting and work space. In the 1920s, Harlem became a coveted address. The neighborhood in New York City was synonymous with an outpouring of production in the visual arts, music, literature, theater, and dance that some began referring to the creative era as the Harlem Renaissance.

Famous artists of the Harlem Renaissance included: sociologist and historian W.E.B. Du Bois, writers Claude McKay, Langton Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston, musician Duke Ellington, and entertainer Josephine Baker. These artists strove to express their racial identity and pride.

Jacob Lawrence, an artist of the Harlem Renaissance, believed his paintings were “a portrait of myself, a portrait of my community.” The community he grew up around included artist and mentor Charles Alston and leading philosopher Alain LeRoy Locke.

The people of Harlem and their rich heritage were constant sources of inspiration for Lawrence. The community experience—its triumphs and tragedies, its dreams and disappointments, its pleasures and humility, collectively forged by the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Depression era—lives on in his paintings.

Mac had nearly given up in their quest to trace their family history. The trail had gone cold several times, but with a bit of digging they had managed to trace back 10 generations. Their expedition to Windenburg had unearthed so much more information, and they were determined to push back as far as possible before the trail ended once and for all.

They were honing in on the name Langston now. It was the maiden name of Marigold and her sister Primrose. So perhaps it would tell them something about where they came from.

Fortunately their first search for a Langston produced a result, which led them back to Britechester once more to explore the University. Charles Ernest Langston II, a noted archaeologist and historical academic of the University, had an entire wing named after him in the archaeology department. Though internet searches had brought up fragments of his history, Mac had learned that this Mr Langston was a notable figure in academia in the 1900s. Perhaps, he was the next link in the chain.

Upon exploring the archaeology building, Mac was thrilled to find their first piece of information - a photograph. Hanging on the wall, as captioned below, was Charles Ernest Langston II, immortalised in black and white. A face they could put to the name.

Further searching on the library computers of Britechester brought up more nuggets of information. Mac and Hugo searched through images and old pages, finding a photograph of what appeared to be Mr Langston and his family - two sons, and one daughter who resembled the sisters Marigold and Primrose. Though it didn't entirely make sense to Mac... weren't there two daughters?

The births and marriages records confirmed further to them that Charles Ernest Langston II married Madeleine Jane Eldridge, whose family name had roots in Brindleton Bay. Mac was ecstatic - they knew where they would be going next.

'It's like a second wind!' they exclaimed to Hugo as they walked through the town. 'The universe is giving me some kind of sign not to give up.' They threw their arms around their new friend, excited to share these revelations with somebody else.

'Hopefully Brindleton Bay will shed something more on where old Mr Langston came from,' said Hugo with a grin. 'Maybe this isn't the end just yet.'

James Earl Jones (January 17, 1931 – September 9, 2024) Actor known for his film roles and his work in theater. He was one of the few performers to achieve the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1985, and was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 1992, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2009, and the Academy Honorary Award in 2011.

 On television, Jones received eight Primetime Emmy Awards nominations winning twice for his roles in thriller film Heat Wave (1990) and the crime series Gabriel's Fire (1991). He also acted in Roots (1977), Jesus of Nazareth (1977), Picket Fences (1994), Homicide: Life on the Street (1997) and Everwood (2004).

Jones played lead characters on television in three series. Gabriel's Fire and a revamped version called Pros and Cons aired on ABC between 1990 and 1992. In both formats of that show, Jones played a former policeman wrongly convicted of murder who, upon his release from prison, becomes a private eye. In 1995, Jones starred in Under One Roof as Neb Langston, a widowed African-American police officer sharing his home in Seattle with his daughter, his married son and children, and Neb's newly adopted son. The show was a mid-season replacement and lasted only six weeks, but earned him another Emmy nomination. He also portrayed Thad Green on "Mathnet", a parody of Dragnet that appeared in the PBS program Square One Television.[59] In 1998, Jones starred in the widely acclaimed syndicated program An American Moment (created by James R. Kirk and Ninth Wave Productions). Jones took over the role filled by Charles Kuralt, upon Kuralt's death.

Jones guest-starred in many television shows over the years, including for NBC's Law & Order, and Frasier, ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Fox's medical drama House, M.D., and CBS' The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. He also voiced the CNN tagline, "This is CNN". He lent his voice to the opening for NBC's coverage of the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. (Wikipedia)

The Ultimate Outsider: A 1995 Interview with Gypsy Lou Webb

'In the 1960s, out of a tiny French Quarter apartment, Gypsy Lou and Jon Webb published a journal called "The Outsider," with ground-breaking work by beat writers like Charles Bukowski, Henry Miller, Langston Hughes, and Jack Kerouac.

THE ARTIST & HER WORK: ELIZABETH CATLETT

Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) lived a storied life. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be an artist, and pursued her dreams by receiving a BA in Art from Howard University in 1935.

She married Charles White (another legacy artist), and together they moved to NYC, where their circle of friends included the likes of Loïs Mailou Jones, Charles Alston, Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, and Langston Hughes. 

In 1946, the pair moved to Mexico, where Catlett was a guest artist at the printmaking collective Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP). This was a formative time in her practice, as her work became increasingly sociopolitical. She began spending time with Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and David Siqueiros and was committed to representing strength and struggle in her work. During the Red Scare of the 1950s, her activism and work with TGP came under investigation by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and the U.S. embassy in Mexico. She was declared an "Undesirable Alien" and was prevented from returning to the States. By 2002, her citizenship was reinstated, and she became a celebrated artist around the world. Images:

[I am not a fan of either artist - but I have to agree with Mr. Cave here...]

Nick Cave isn't keen on transgressive poet Charles Bukowski, as evidenced by a recent exchange on the former's Website, The Red Hand Files. A fan had submitted the following comment:

"In my opinion you are one of the bonzerist geezers around, like Bukowski with a geetar. Thank you Mr. Cave."

To which Cave kindly responded:

I'm sorry, Simon, I don't like being compared to Charles Bukowski. I appreciate you were trying to be kind and make me feel good and everything but I don't like the man. This a well known fact. Now, if you had called me, say, the 'Philip Larkin of the Joanna' or the 'Stevie Smith of the Ivories' or the 'All Singing, All Dancing John Berryman' or 'Langston Hughes of the Banger', I'd be lot happier. But, I don't know, Simon, I just don't like Charles Bukowski. In my opinion, Charles Bukowski is the 'Bukkake of Bad Poetry', just blowing his junk around. I don't like him. I just don't. Not even a bit. No, not at all.
